Favourite Regeneration Project

Emirates Stadium, Highbury – The masterplan implemented to facilitate the move of Arsenal FC from our home at Highbury to the Emirates Stadium demonstrates what is achievable when public and private sector work together. Islington Council and Arsenal FC worked together to identify a nearby brownfield site that had been vacant for decades that would allow the club to remain in the local area. The masterplan also facilitated the regeneration of an area of Holloway that had previously been identified as one of the most deprived and under-invested places in the UK. The plan included provisions for not only a new stadium but also 3,000 new homes, 50% of which were affordable, a new ecological centre and a £60 million state-of-the-art recycling facility. As part of the s106 agreement, Arsenal FC have also subsequently opened a specialised learning facility for local residents. This stadium-led regeneration has led to further social and private residential housing developments to the south of the stadium, as well as new student accommodation that has recently been completed for London Metropolitan University.
